d. The first time an equipment item is addressed it shall be fully identified. For example, AN/SPS-73(V) 12
Radar System, or SSDS MK 2 MOD 4B Combat Direction System introduces the equipment by its full official nomenclature. The Army/Navy designation or MK and MOD designations may be omitted thereafter or an abbreviation may be used, such as SPS-73 or SSDS MK 2. Abbreviations or acronyms shall be spelled out on first use; for example, Ship Self Defense System (SSDS).
e. Where more than one MOD of equipment is described, each MOD shall be indicated; for example, SSDS MK 2 MOD 3 and 3A.
4.4.5 Capitalization and punctuation. The Government Printing Office (GPO) Style Manual shall be used as a guide for capitalization and punctuation.
4.4.6 Spelling. Spelling should be in accordance with general Navy and standard dictionary usage.
4.4.7 Abbreviations. The use of abbreviations should be avoided where practical. When used, abbreviations should reflect general Navy usage and may be used only with permission of the contracting organization. If abbreviations are used, a list of abbreviations should be provided as supplemental information in paragraph 12 of the GENERAL INFORMATION. See figure B-9 for an example.
4.4.8 Signs and symbols. The use of symbols shall be avoided whenever practical. When used, signs and symbols shall be as listed in the GPO Style Manual. The following additional rules shall be observed in the use of symbols:
a. Fire control symbols shall be in accordance with NAVSEA OP 1700.
b. Chemical symbols shall not be used unless they form part of the nomenclature. In lieu of symbols, use the chemical names such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen peroxide.
c. Graphic symbols shall be in accordance with ANSI/ISO 14617 series and ANSI/IEEE STD 315 for electrical and electronic diagrams.
4.4.9 Type style. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), type font shall be sans serif generic 11 point such as Arial, Calibri, or similar. Consideration should be given to consistency of type style, applicability for automatic input to a word processing system, and ease of reading in dimly lighted shipboard spaces.
4.4.10 Spacing requirements. Test procedures shall be single-spaced with an extra line space between paragraphs, subparagraphs, testing steps, warnings, cautions, or notes.
4.4.11 Page numbering. Pages shall be numbered consecutively beginning with the cover sheet. The first page number shall also indicate the total number of pages in the document as follows: Page 1 of .
4.4.12 Electronic media-developed test procedures. Test procedures can be developed in a variety of electronic media formats and should contain the entire original, revised, or changed test procedure. The delivered file should be converted to a standardized document exchange format such as Adobe® Acrobat® Portable Document Format (PDF) so that the end user(s) can use the test procedure without the requirements of having the same program(s)
used to develop the procedure. This also allows the file to be printed without rearranging or reformatting pages.
