Primary hardware identifier (segment 1). The Primary Hardware Identifier is mandatory in every test document title and shall consist of the AN/XXX-YY (V) or MK/MOD nomenclature when the associated hardware has such nomenclature. When AN or MK/MOD nomenclature has not been assigned, the official name of the equipment or system shall be used as the Primary Hardware Identifier. Use of the words system, subsystem, equipment, component, etc., shall be avoided because of the ambiguity in interpretation of their meaning. Also, these words require character spaces in the title fields which can be better utilized for other descriptive material. When AN or MK/MOD nomenclature is assigned, the full descriptive name shall not be used in favor of an accepted acronym. Examples of Primary Hardware Identifiers are:
a. MK 57 MOD 12 NSSMS
b. AN/SPS-49 RADAR
Secondary hardware identifier (segment 2). The Secondary Hardware Identifier shall be used to identify an interfacing item of equipment or a secondary system which is included in the test. Hence, Secondary Hardware Identifiers are only used with test stage four (intrasystem) and test stage five (intersystem) tests. Where both Primary and Secondary Hardware Identifiers are used, the hardware which is predominant or controlling the test shall be listed first. Examples of Secondary Hardware Identifiers (underlined) in conjunction with Primary Hardware Identifiers are:
a. AN/WSN-7 TO AN/SSN-6 NAVSSI
b. MK 23 MOD 1 TAS TO MK57 MOD10 NSSMS
Test type modifier (segment 3). The Test Type Modifier shall be used to qualify or augment the test type. Not all tests will require the use of a modifier. Examples of Test Type Modifiers (underlined) are provided below:
a. SIGNAL DATA PROCESSOR OFF-LINE DIAGNOSTIC
b. MK 15 MOD 22 CIWS GUN BARREL ALIGNMENT c. ELECTRONIC DRY AIR UNOBSTRUCTED FLOW d. REFRIGERATION PLANT PRESSURE TIGHTNESS e. PROPELLER SHAFT BEARING CLEARANCE
Test type (segment 4). The Test Type states the functional objective which the test is intended to satisfy and is mandatory within each test document title. Examples of test titles using Test Types (underlined) are:
a. MK15 MOD 22 CIWS INITIAL LIGHT OFF
b. CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST
c. WASTE FOOD DISPOSAL OPERATIONAL TEST
d. AN/SPS-73 EXTERNAL INTERFACES
e. AN/SPS-49 TRANSMIT PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION
f. GENERAL ANNOUNCING SYSTEM SOUND SURVEY
g. ELECTRONIC DRY AIR UNOBSTRUCTED FLOW
